Student Travel Guide Amsterdam
The Ultimate Travel Guide to Amsterdam for students and backpackers
Introduction to Amsterdam
Amsterdam is Europe’s 5th busiest tourist destination and also Holland’s largest and most exciting attraction. There is no wonder, considering it is home to the infamous red light district, picturesque canals, "coffee" shops and beautiful museums. As well as these attractions, Amsterdam is cheap and easy to get to with a minimal language barrier. The capital city of Holland is laid out like a half wheel, with the oldest part in the middle surrounded by the Singel Canal. Here you will find the Nes theatre street, which includes many small old fashioned streets, the royal palace at the Dam and the red light district.
The city has been quoted as “the Venice of the north” due to the number of stunning canals it possesses. As well as sight-seeing, Amsterdam also has many shopping areas: Leidsestraat, Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk being the main locations, however various smaller shops located around the city may be worth visiting. The city itself is fairly small, with most attractions in the centre being walkable. This can only encourage you to explore the many attractions and culture that Amsterdam has to offer.
If you’re a follower of football, Amsterdam is home to Ajax football club, one of Europe’s elite teams. Holland also has some brilliant beaches, well accessed from The Hague, where you can also visit some good museums. You will find a vibrant student and arts culture in Eindhoven and Dordrecht where the nightlife is like student night every night, you will find plenty of live music and great bars. Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most talked about tourist attractions for a reason. There is something for everyone, whether you’re interested in history and culture, or you want to walk down the red light district, the city is an excellent destination where seeing is believing!
