Student Travel Guide to Dublin
The Ultimate Travel Guide to Dublin for students and backpackers
Introduction to Dublin
Dublin is the largest city in Ireland and has one of the fastest growing populations of any city in Europe. There is no wonder when considering the cities friendly and welcoming nature. The capital is located at the mouth of the river Liffey, who’s meandering and fast-flowing waters craft their way through the city. One of the main features of the river are its many beautiful bridges, the most famous being the O’Connell Bridge, named after Daniel O’Connell in 1882. You can find monuments and statues of Ireland’s old political leader along O’Connell Street.
The city of Dublin is full of culture and history, one of the most impressive buildings being the historic Customs and Excise House, which stands proudly on the banks of the Liffey. Another remarkable building is Leinster House, built in 1745, it is the seat of power in Dublin. Some of Dublin castle, which was built in 1214, remains in place today and is well worth visiting. If you’re interested in history, then Ireland’s oldest and most prestigious university, Trinity College Dublin cannot be missed as it holds one of the oldest books in the world, the Book of Kells.
The capital is sports mad, with Rugby, Football and Gaelic football being the home favourite sports. The city also boasts the 4th largest stadium in Europe, Croke Park, capacitating 82,500 fans. The city has many bars and restaurants and also has impressive shopping on Grafton Street. The city is possibly most famous for its production of Guinness, where you will never be shy of opportunities to order a pint!

Student Nightlife in Dublin
The city is famous for its partying atmosphere and the Temple bar area is where most partygoers are found. Just south of the Liffey, you will experience a lively atmosphere with various clubs and bars and the famous Temple Bar itself. This area has become increasingly popular amongst stag and hen parties in Britain and is rapidly becoming a nightlife hotspot. Pubs in Dublin are normally open till late at night so pubs and clubs are easily mistaken as there is little distinction between the two.
Rock band U2 own ‘The Kitchen’, although the venue demands a reasonable amount of money, it all but guarantees a good night out. As well as the Temple bar area, O’Connell Street is also very lively and home to a variety of bars and clubs. If you’re looking for a more relaxed evening, Grafton Street has many pubs and clubs for a more sedate crowd. Although Ireland brought in a no smoking policy in public places a few years ago, this hasn’t stopped the locals doing what the Irish do best, partying!
