Student Travel Guide to Edinburgh

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Edinburgh for students and backpackers

Introduction to Edinburgh

The capital city of Scotland is a mix of towering old townhouses, monuments and bridges with Edinburgh castle overlooking the whole city. It is a massive tourist destination, with over 2 million tourists visiting the capital each year. Famous for its annual festival held in August, this friendly city is an excellent way to relax and enjoy one of Europe’s most architecturally beautiful places. Edinburgh has been classed a World Heritage Site, where the city is honoured for its outstanding universal value. The city was recognised for its distinctive blend of medieval old town and neo-classical new town.

Edinburgh has been regarded as one of the greenest cities in the continent due to its naturally clean and bracing air. Its pleasant open spaces and attractive architecture gives the city a countryside feel in a large urban centre. The city is full of museums, traditional shops as well as designer shops so you will have more than enough to keep you entertained.

Edinburgh is home to the national rugby stadium, Murrayfield, as well as 2 top class Scottish football teams, Hibernian and Hearts. The city is easy to reach with a number of airlines flying into Edinburgh airport. Also there are regular and affordable coach and train journeys into the city. Once there, much of the city is accessible on foot with a bus service also providing trouble-free transport.
