Student Travel Guide to Lisbon

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Lisbon for students and backpackers

Introduction to Lisbon

The Portuguese capital is on the Atlantic Ocean coast at the point where the river Tagus meets the Atlantic Ocean. The city has remained predominantly unchanged since medieval times. St George’s castle is a focal point of the city and is lit up at night, which dominated the Lisbon skyline. Due to the extensive nature of the castle, it is advised that a whole day is needed to explore inside and outside of the grounds.

The city is known for having a very mild temperature, with plenty of sunshine all year round. The beautiful stretch of beach in Lisbon is a major attraction amongst tourists as a city break can turn into a relaxing seaside holiday.

Lisbon is nestled in around 7 hills, some so steep that motor vehicles can’t make it up! The city is full of great architecture, so much so it is being considered for World Heritage status. Recent impressive architecture includes the 25 de Abril Bridge, that connects Lisbon with the other side of the river Tagus. The bridge remains one of the longest suspension bridges in Europe.

There are over 50 museums across the city with a large number of traditional restaurants and retail shops. With prices relatively cheap, this picturesque city is ideal for maxing and relaxing in a warm, friendly environment during the day, before partying the night away!

Here you will also find some nightclubs that are popular amongst a young, fashionable crowd. Bairro Alto, a quiet village in the day, comes to life at night with a range of restaurants and stylish bars.
