Student Travel Guide to London

The Ultimate Travel Guide to London for students and backpackers

Introduction to London

London is one of the most historic and exciting cities in the world that offers a variety of things to do and an incredible nightlife. As the city is so big, travelling in and around the city is vital. The transport system is extremely good with a tube service running from early in the morning until around midnight. A travel card is advisable as it allows you unlimited travel on the entire transport system.

The capital is famous for its royal parks, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens being two of the most popular in the centre of the city. The river Thames is also a major attraction for tourists and a pleasure cruise along the river provides visible access to many of the cities famous landmarks. London also has an incredible array of museums and galleries, many of them with free admission. The Tate Modern art gallery is amongst the most popular.

London is home to attractions such as The Royal Albert Hall and the recently built Wembley stadium, which is the most expensive in the world. In 2012 London will become the first city to have hosted the Olympic Games on 3 occasions.

A trip to London wouldn’t be complete these days without going on the London eye. The 135 meter tall wheel is the most popular paid visitor attraction in the UK and on a clear day, allows you to see the whole of the city in its full glory. Along with Big Ben, The houses of parliament and Buckingham palace, the London eye contributes to making London one of the most attractive cities in the world.

Student Nightlife in London

The majority of nightlife in London consists of drinking and clubbing. With a huge variety of bars and clubs all over the city, you will be spoilt for choice on a night out. Many people like to start their night in Covent Garden or Leicester square before moving on to one of the many superclubs. G.A.Y at the Astoria on Charing Cross road is largely considered as the cities premier nightclub.

Islington also has a large assortment of bars and restaurants, and as it’s outside of central London, prices are generally more affordable. If you head east around Shoreditch and Brick Lane you will find a wide range of clubs catering for all music tastes. If you’re not big on the club scene, there is always the guided bus tour available at night time on one of the cities famous red double decker buses. Wherever you’re staying in the city, there is a range of exciting bars and clubs that accommodate any taste and budget.
