The Ultimate Travel Guide to Rome for students and backpackers
Introduction to Rome
As the capital of Italy, Rome is the largest and most popular city in the country. Founded in 753BC, the city is full of history and beautiful ancient architecture, the most famous in the city being the Colosseum. This amphitheatre is the largest ever built by the Roman Empire and hosted gladiatorial contests and extravagant shows for the premier members of Roman society.
In almost every piazza, religious buildings can be found. St Peter’s Church is the most popular attraction, due to its sheer size and beautiful architecture. If you take time to visit the Sistine Chapel and beautiful museums in Vatican City, you will be truly astonished. The city is full of fine restaurants and Piazza Navona, the cities most famous square, is home to a host of tourists enjoying a bite to eat whilst street performers entertain them.
The city is easy to get around by foot as it is laid out in distinct blocks. However there is always the option of hopping on a horse-driven carriage to explore this stunning city. Many tourists decide to take a walk along the banks of the Tiber in order to relax and take in the atmosphere of the capital. There is a popular and elegant shopping district located around Via del Corso, including many designer retailers.
Football is the most popular sport in Rome. Having held the world cup final in 1990, The Stadio Olimpico is also home to Serie A clubs A.S. Roma and S.S. Lazio. Although some way behind football in the popularity rankings, rugby union is fastly gaining wider acceptance in Italy.
